01  —  Overview

A picture of the future, before the future.

Astypalea is becoming the first smart & sustainable island in the Mediterranean — a joint initiative of the Hellenic Republic and the Volkswagen Group to run a whole island on green energy and electric mobility.

The brief was to explain one pillar of that vision to residents and the public: the CaRe — Car Recycling Programme, which retires the island's old combustion vehicles and feeds them back into the loop. Abstract policy had to become something a local could watch in under two minutes and instantly understand. I took it end-to-end — script-to-screen design, animation, and the complete sound mix.

02  —  Design

A flat, clean visual system built from the island itself.

The art direction leans on the programme's blue / green / lime palette and a single idea: the island as a butterfly. Crisp line-icons, generous negative space and a continuous "road" that threads every scene together — so the film reads as one journey, not a deck of slides.

03  —  Motion Design

Everything moves with intent, nothing for decoration.

Animated in After Effects on a strict rhythm: the road draws on, elements build in sequence with the voice-over, and transforms (a combustion car becoming an EV, old fleets routing to recycling) do the explaining. Timing is keyed to the narration so the eye always lands where the words are.

  • Build-on storytelling. Scenes assemble piece-by-piece in sync with the script, never all at once.
  • One continuous line. The road motif animates between every beat to keep a single spatial thread.
  • Transform, don't cut. Concepts morph — fleet to recycling, fuel to electric — instead of hard cutting.
  • Data with weight. Counters, fills and charts animate to land the numbers (chargers, %, tonnes).
  • Two ratios, one language. Re-staged for 16:9 and 1:1 without losing the motion logic.

The payoff beat. Numbers, icons and movement combine to make the recycling impact tangible.
04  —  Sound Design

A mix that carries the picture.

I built the full soundtrack: directing and editing the Greek voice-over, scoring with a warm music bed, and cutting a layer of motion-matched SFX so every transform, counter and reveal has a sound. Three stems, one balanced master — below is the actual mix.

05  —  Deliverables

One film, sized for every screen it had to live on.

  • 16:9 Master — broadcast / web hero, Greek & English.
  • 1:1 Square — social feeds, re-staged frame by frame.
  • Subtitled cuts — burned-in GR subtitles for sound-off viewing.
  • Audio stems — VO / music / SFX, delivered split.

Sustainability, made to feel personal. The closing movement gathers the whole island into a single symbol.
